On October 22, 2026, Héctor Cancela, Rector of Universidad de la República (Udelar), Uruguay, visited Shanghai Jiao Tong University, accompanied by Marcelo Clóvis Magnou Pérez, Consul General of Uruguay in Shanghai. Liu Weidong, Vice President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, met with the delegation. Yin Shan, Vice Dean of the School of Agriculture and Biology, attended the meeting and introduced an overview of the School and its ideas for international cooperation.

Vice President Liu Weidong stated that the university attaches great importance to exchanges with high-level universities in Latin America. As the largest and oldest public comprehensive university in Uruguay, Universidad de la República has a profound academic foundation in agricultural sciences, veterinary medicine, and life sciences. He expressed the hope that this visit would serve as an opportunity to gradually establish practical cooperation mechanisms in student exchanges, research collaboration, and cultural exchanges. Rector Cancela expressed his expectation to strengthen disciplinary alignment and faculty-student exchanges, and to advance talent cultivation and joint research.

During the exchange session, Vice Dean Yin Shan first introduced an overview of the School of Agriculture and Biology, particularly noting that in pursuing international education, the School is actively expanding its network of global partners with the university's support. He stated that the discussions with Universidad de la República have expanded the School's partnership map to include South American agricultural and livestock countries. Leveraging the construction of the International College of Agriculture and Ecology, the School could reach a preliminary framework agreement on future cooperation with Universidad de la República in disciplines such as horticulture, veterinary medicine, ecology, and food science and engineering, facilitating further discussions on faculty-student exchanges, joint courses, and joint program applications.

The School looks forward to using this university-level meeting as an opportunity, relying on inter-university cooperation, to advance the School's international collaboration toward a broader regional scope.
