Undergraduate Program

Profile of Bachelor Program

Currently, the School of Agriculture and Biology comprises five full-time undergraduate programs, i.e.: plant biotechnology, animal biotechnology, resource and environmental science, landscape, food science and engineering.

The school actively explores the talents training mode of agricultural science and technology innovation in a comprehensive university, adheres to the wide caliber specialized education based on general education, increases the efforts in the transformation and upgrading of traditional agricultural disciplines by use of biological, information, engineering and other modern sciences and technologies and constructs the teaching platform of basic courses of agricultural biology. Based on the implementation of studies and discussions on educational thought, the school finalizes the revision of 2005 edition undergraduate teaching and training program, advocates research-based teaching and learning, changes the traditional experiment teaching model for affiliated single theory teaching course, independently sets the practice teaching course, separates the theoretical course from laboratory course in the basic course platform, constructs the comprehensive experiments (1), (2) and (3) for each discipline in specialty-oriented courses and strengthens the graduation thesis (design) and other practical teaching procedures.

The school has strengthened researches on the cultivation of innovative talents in the agricultural science and technology and construction of teaching materials. The assignment of Research and Practice of Cultivation Mode of Modern Agricultural Scientific Innovation Talents won the special prize for teaching achievements in higher education and the first prize for teaching achievements in Shanghai. In the university textbooks review conducted once every four years in Shanghai, Principles of Food Engineering and Introduction to Urban Agriculture won the second prize for Shanghai excellent teaching materials in common colleges and universities. Among them, the Principles of Food Engineering is evaluated as Shanghai excellent course, symbolizing the zero breakthrough of excellent course. The school enrolls new students according to the principles of “Biotechnology class” and “Environmental & Ecology Category” and there is no need for new students to be allocated to corresponding disciplines. At the end of the 3rd semester, students may select one discipline in their respective majors after the approvals from school and university, based on course grades and personal applications during the first academic year. Most students may also take optional courses for the bachelor’s degree of second discipline. At the 7th semester, a certain percentage of students may take directly their master’s and doctoral degrees. In 2005, seven students were selected to study at the University of Hong Kong and Chinese University of  Hong Kong for exchange learning. The school engages on or off campus academicians and doctoral advisors to open the Lectures on Modern Agricultural Frontier, so as to enable students to understand the research and development prospects of modern agricultural science and technology and stimulate the enthusiasm for learning among students.

The school vigorously implements the Participation in Research Program (PRP) and invests RMB 300,000 for the improvements of experimental conditions in experiment teaching center, in order to improve the quality of experiment teachings and extracurricular studies. Moreover, the school also invites on or off campus academicians and doctoral advisors to open the Lectures on Modern Agricultural Frontier, so as to enable students to understand the research and development prospects of modern agricultural science and technology and stimulate the enthusiasm for learning among students. The school vigorously implements the Participation in Research Program (PRP) and invests RMB 300,000 for the improvements of experimental conditions in experiment teaching center, in order to improve the quality of experiment teachings and extracurricular studies.
