The major of animal biotechnology was created according to the features of our school, and demands from the corresponding fields and social development. Students are required to possess high moral and educational qualification, and master basic theories, techniques and skills of modern biotechnology, information science, animal breeding and reproduction, feed, environment science, management and disease prevention, etc. They are fit to the positions such as teaching and research, and could take technical and management jobs in departments such as veterinary administration, animal inspection and quarantine, feed & veterinary medicines inspection, animal production, biological products and veterinary clinical, etc.
The major of Animal Biotechnology is run by The Department of Animal Science, which consists of two doctoral programs that are affiliated with the primary discipline of Biomedical Engineering, including Biotechnology and Preventive Veterinary Medicine & Food safety of Livestock. It also consists of one Master’s program of zootechnical science as a primary discipline, one of Preventive Veterinary as sub-discipline, as well as Shanghai Municipality Key Laboratory of Veterinary Biotechnology. The main research interest include: genetics and breeding, reproduction and development, nutrition and feed, veterinary Microorganisms and animal infectious disease, etc.
Graduates of this major could study further as master and/or Ph.D. degree candidates in the fields of animal genetics & breeding, embryonic engineering, nutrition & feedstuff, preventive medicine and other related ones, or choose to take jobs like animal inspection & quarantine, feedstuff & veterinary medicine inspection, animal breeding & reproduction, feedstuff production, and so on.
