TITLE:Plant trichomes: The genetic battle behind the 'trichome formation'

ABSTRACT

Plant trichomes serve as an important barrier against biotic and abiotic stresses, while secretory glandular trichomes can synthesize various economically valuable secondary metabolites. As a specialized structure of plant epidermal cells, they serve as an ideal model for studying cell differentiation and fate determination. It has been determined that multiple genes within the plant HD-ZIP IV family exhibit conserved functions in the formation of trichomes across various plant species. However, the functional differentiation, synergistic regulation, and hormonal response mechanisms among its members remain poorly understood. Additionally, the current understanding of the biological functions of trichomes is relatively limited, with many biological functions yet to be explored. Our recent research has revealed that tomato fruit trichomes are a key factor influencing post-harvest fruit quality, offering potential as a new target for extending postharvest shelf-life.
