特里·埃瑟顿教授简介:

Dr. Etherton is internationally recognized for his research in the area of endocrine regulation of animal growth and nutrient metabolism. Dr. Etherton is a leading authority on the need for and role of agricultural biotechnology in the global food system. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific journal articles and presented more than 190 invited seminars. His research program made numerous seminal contributions that have increased the understanding of how animal growth is regulated by growth hormone (somatotropin). Dr. Etherton is most noted for his studies that were the first to establish that administration of recombinantly-derived porcine growth hormone (pGH) to growing pigs improved growth rate, increased muscle mass and decreased body fat. His laboratory was the first to show that the reduction in lipid deposition in pigs treated with pGH is the result of a decrease in lipid synthesis. He and his associates established that this perturbation in lipid synthesis was the result of pGH inhibiting intracellular insulin signal pathway(s).

Dr. Etherton was an invited Visiting Fellow of The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinshaft (German Research Society) at the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart, Germany in 1984. He has served as Section Editor of Growth and Developmental Biology for the Journal of Animal Science and as Editor of Current Concepts of Animal Growth IV. In addition, Dr. Etherton was the recipient of the Young Scientist Award from the Northeast Section of ASDA/ASAS in 1986. Dr. Etherton was awarded the Gamma Sigma Delta award for outstanding research by the College of Agriculture in 1988. In 1990, Dr. Etherton received the Hoffmann-LaRoche Animal Growth and Development Award from the American Society of Animal Science in recognition of his research accomplishments. Dr. Etherton is the recipient of Penn State's highest honor for excellence in research, The University Faculty Scholar Medal in Life and Health Sciences. In 1993, Dr. Etherton received the Alex and Jessie C. Black Award for Excellence in Research from the College of Agricultural Sciences at Penn State. Dr. Etherton chaired the National Research Council committee that published the highly acclaimed report, “Metabolic Modifiers: Effects on the Nutrient Requirements of Food-Producing Animals" in 1994. In recognition of his scholarly accomplishments, he was awarded the title, Distinguished Professor, in 1996. Dr. Etherton has served as President of the American Society of Animal Science and the Federation of Animal Science Societies (FASS).
